7 tips for keeping red hair color rich and vibrant
A beauty dilemma faced by less-than-natural redheads the world over is how to keep your red hair colour from fading. The pigments used in red hair colour don’t penetrate the hair as deeply as other colour shades, which unfortunately means that the colour fades more easily than some others. Don’t despair, though! With a little extra upkeep and TLC, you can ensure your red hair remains glossy and vibrant. Read on to learn more about haircare for redheads.
#1. Use colour depositing shampoos and conditioners# –
Hold on to your vibrant red hair colour by washing your hair as little as possible. Try a spritz of dry shampoo in between washes to make your clean hair last. When your hair does need to be cleaned, choose a shampoo and conditioner which will protect colour as you wash your red hair.
#2. Protect from the sun# –
Red pigments are sensitive to light and can fade quickly with repeated exposure to the sun’s UV rays, even in winter. Using a sun protection spray and wrapping your hair up in a hat or scarf will help prolong its colour vibrancy.
#3. Refresh# –
Redheads will need a colour boost more frequently to keep up richness from root to tip. When opting for bright red hair colours, look for products packed with colour lock technology which will produce a high impact colour like Garnier Color Naturals in Raspberry Red and Intense Red. If you want a more reddish-purple hair colour, try the shade Plum Red instead.
#4. Hair health# –
Keep your hair healthy! Styling hair causes damage which reduces the shine and vibrancy of your coloured hair. Avoid using heated hair styling tools when possible or try no-heat curls. If you do have to fire up the tongs, make sure you use a protective spray before using them on your hair.
#5. Condition, condition, condition# –
Did we mention that your hair needs to be in tip-top condition to get the most from your red hair colour? Use a leave-in conditioner when heading out for the day and opt for a hydrating hair mask to protect your hair when lounging at the pool. Using these products consistently will help to keep your bright red hair colour looking luscious for longer.
#6. Gloss# –
The glossier your hair is, the more pigmented it will look. High-shine glosses and serums enhance colour vibrancy for a bolder, brighter appearance in between colouring.
#7. Skip shampoo# –
After colouring, wait at least 48 hours to shampoo, longer if you can. This will give the colour plenty of time to set. When you do use shampoo on your hair, be sure to condition it too. Conditioning your hair will help keep your red hair colour looking glossy as well as reducing fading. Use cool water when you wash your hair to help seal in the shine.
